Who I Was

When you look at me
What do you see?
Do you see someone who
Trips over her own shoes?
Someone with such a thick shell
Built up in her own living hell
Someone who used to cry every night
And come to school so full of fright
Someone who sunk into the background
Hid so she wouldn’t make a sound
And even when she did, they’d call her out
Call her mean names, hit and shout
These people didn’t see the girl who cowered in the corner
Who wanted confidence, was intelligent and growing bolder
A girl who wondered what she did to make them so arrogant
When all they saw was a girl who was different
They made her self-conscious, a nerd, and a loser
And laughed at the things they did to her
A girl so down and torn apart with the words of knives
A girl ready to take her own life
Even with their sticks and stones
They broke no bones
But their names stung like razors
Cutting from the inside leaving scars within her
So the next time you look at me
What do you see?
Do you see a girl who finally saw the silver lining?
Who moved to a place where the sun keeps shining
Someone who realised life goes on
That she is beautiful and strong
Even when the scars start to burn
She looked back on the stuff she learned
And sees that even with the things they said
Your soul can come back from the dead
And one by one the shells slowly start to disappear
Taking away the nightmares and fears
So don’t judge me for who I am or what I do
Because what did I ever do to you?
I was the girl who remembers because
It reminds me of who I was
